Cheer On Madisonville Dragon Boat Racers
May 4, 2017 | Kim Higgins
Get ready to experience the excitement of dragon boat racing at the 5th annual Dragon Boat Racing Festival in Madisonville, LA on May 13, 2017! This free festival is sponsored by Walgreens and is held along the banks of the Tchefuncte River where you will see 40 teams competing in 500-meter races. Each team is composed of 20 paddlers. Dragon boat racing originated in ancient China about 2,500 years ago and came to the United States about 30 years ago, where it has become a popular sport here and throughout the world. The boats are 40-foot long canoes with a dragon head at the front and dragon tail at the back. There is a drummer in the front of the boat keeping the paddlers in sync as they race. This is a great team building sport because each paddler must work in unison with other team members in order to develop a smooth and efficient delivery. If you would like to register for the race in Madisonville, please see the following link: https://www.gwndragonboat.com/registration/Default.asp?page=EVENTS&type=2. In addition to the races, the festival also features food vendors, children’s activities and Walgreens Health and Wellness Village with products and services designed to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Proceeds from the festival go to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. For additional information on the cancer center, please visit the website at www.marybird.org/stph.
