Come join Relay for Life, the major fundraising event of the American Cancer Society! Relay for Life takes place on Saturday, May 20 from 3-11 PM at Westwego Farmer’s Market, 484 Sala Ave. in Westwego. In 1985 Dr.Gordon Klatt from Tacoma, WA devised the idea for Relay for Life when he walked and ran for 24 hours and received $27,000 in pledges. The next year, the first Relay for Life began with 19 teams participating and receiving $33,000 in pledges. Since then, it has grown enormously and includes participation in 20 countries in 5,200 communities. This is how Relay for Life works: Each team is assigned a track or path and at least 1 team member must be walking on the track/path at all times to symbolize the constant fight against cancer. These events normally last 6-24 hours and teams also get a themed campsite where they sell food, games and activities. The money collected goes towards their fundraising goal.Team members include cancer patients, survivors, family members, and caregivers.
