On the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain,
was founded in 1882, during construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad (N.O.N.E.), which connected New Orleans to Mississippi. Named after the American politician and ambassador to France John Slidell, Slidell became a major camp
between the Gulf States.
John William Gause was among the first settlers of Slidell, building a log cabin and a lumber mill near a budding town center in the area. Gause's hauling back and forth from his lumber yard to his home created a makeshift road, which is known today
as Gause Boulevard.
